Welcome to Tea Time Tuesday Chocolate Chip Cookies Edition…

There is a briskness in the air that is letting us know that it is truly autumn time. We are in our sixth week of the school year, and we have settled into our routine. With everything going smoothly we had a day full of coziness… Cozy sweaters, snuggly blankets, and homemade chocolate chip cookies and milk! All of these things were a perfect fit for our Tea Time Tuesday Chocolate Chip Cookies Edition.

Featured Recipe

This week Kenten made us homemade chocolate chip cookies. To make your own cookies you will need:

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips


You can find the instructions here. Since Kenten completed his work before we the rest of us were done, he baked and cleaned everything up by himself. His cookies were perfect, and we were able to eat them fresh out of the oven when they were still warm and gooey (yum).

**This recipe calls for walnuts. We skipped the nuts because I don’t care for them.**

Tea Time Tuesday Confetti Edition

Welcome to Tea Time Tuesday Confetti Edition…

This week we talked about nature’s confetti–leaves! Usually this time of year in Michigan is full of beautiful colors on all the trees, but sadly a lot of the trees in our yard have lost their leaves. That didn’t stop us from talking about all about them though! I found a sweet poem on Hello Poetry that shares my opinion that leaves are nature’s confetti, and it is absolutely beautiful. I just love that I get to share my love of poetry with my children every week, and that is especially true with this Tea Time Tuesday Confetti Edition.

This week Julia made Funfetti Cupcake Cones. To make your own you will need:

  • 1 package Pillsbury Funfetti® Premium Cake Mix
  • Additional ingredients to prepare cake mix per package directions
  • 24 ice cream cake cones (about 2 3/4-inches tall with flat bottoms)
  • 2 containers Pillsbury Funfetti® Vanilla Flavored Frosting

Tea Time Tuesday End of September Edition

Welcome to Tea Time Tuesday End of September Edition…

If you have been following along you know that last week we took a break from Tea Time Tuesday because my nephew passed away. It has been a rough couple of days, but with the end of September approaching we are trying to get back into the swing of things. This week in math Jack is working on calendar activities, and has been struggling with how many days each month has. I figured it was the perfect time to bring out an old nursery rhyme for our featured poem this week. In addition to our featured poem, we also read all of our BookShark poems for this week.

This week Kenten helped Jack make sugar cookies. To make your own sugar cookies you will need:

  • 1 1/4 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • powdered sugar (to sprinkle on top)

You can find the recipe here. This is a very easy recipe to follow. Kenten has made these cookies a few times over the last couple of weeks, and everyone loves them. I am so thankful that my sweet boy stepped in for me today so we could still have Tea Time Tuesday.

This week we had Tea Time Tuesday in our school room. You will notice that we did the bare minimum for preparations, but it was still nice to change our setting. I definitely see us using our school room for this more often.

Tea Time Tuesday- Pumpkin Edition

Welcome to another Tea Time Tuesday

This week we are continuing our tradition of ALL things fall! And that tradition called for a Tea Time Tuesday Pumpkin edition. What is fall without pumpkin treats? There is just something about this time of year that we can’t resist… I am loving all the cozy family times we have been having lately, and all the homemade snacks.

Featured Recipe

This week Julia chose to make pumpkin muffins for her Tea Time Tuesday Pumpkin theme. These muffins are one of our favorite fall snacks, especially to bring with us to partnership classes. To make your own pumpkin chocolate chip muffins you will need:

  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 (16 oz) can of pumpkin
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 14 cups vegetable oil
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips

You can find the instructions here. These muffins are very easy to make. A lot of the time we will make a double batch because we just can’t get enough of them.

As you can see we kept our fall table decor out from last week. That didn’t stop Miss Julia from rearranging things multiple times. She informed me that we need to buy some new tablecloths so she has more options in the future (ha).

Tea Time Tuesday- Apple Pie Edition

Welcome to Tea Time Tuesday Apple Pie Edition!

The weather has taken a turn here in Michigan, so we are enjoying all things “fall”… from fun fall decor to apple pie. Although we have lived in this house for a little over two years now, we just used our original wood burning fireplace a few days ago for the first time… I can’t believe we waited this long to fire it up! It has been amazing snuggling up in front of the fire with Ryan, the kids, and our two fur babies. Julia and her dog Henry even feel asleep in front of the fire the other night.
I couldn’t ask for a more amazing start to September! A girl and her dog certainly make for so many amazing memories.

Featured Recipe

This week Jack decided he wanted to make apple pie with the apples he picked from our friend’s yard! (Thank you Miss Tracy for sharing the apple wealth.) To make your own apple pie you will need:

Dough and Filling:

  • Dough for a double crust 9-inch pie (homemade, frozen, or refrigerated)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Dash salt
  • 3 1/2 cups peeled, chopped cooking apples
  • 1 (16 oz) jar applesauce
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter, chopped into small pieces

Crunch Topping:

  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Dash salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter, at room temperature

You can find the instructions for Paula Deen’s Crunch Top Apple Pie here. This is the most amazing apple pie ever!
Word of caution: if you use homemade applesauce you may need to use a little less than the recipe uses… It won’t ruin the pie to use the amount called for, but it is a bit runnier when we use my grandma’s homemade applesauce.

This morning we broke out some of our fall decor. It is always fun changing things up a little in the house. We also rearranged our sitting room so we could all be around the fire, which meant our fern (that by some miracle I have not completely killed in over a year) had to find a new home in our dining room.

Tea Time Tuesday… Back to School Edition

Welcome to another Tea Time Tuesday… Back to School edition!

Our dreary summer has come to an end, and the Raiche kiddos are getting back into the swing of things! I am very excited to kick off our 2017-2018 school year. This week I have chosen a poem talking about how a traditional classroom can take away the joy of learning. Homeschooling is NOT for everyone, but it certainly is the best fit for our family. I am thankful that I am able to be home with my children, so they can thrive in their own environment.

This week Kenten has taken on Cinnabon Cinnamon Rolls. To make your own cinnamon rolls you will need:

Dough
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup milk warm
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup margarine I used softened unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
Filling
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 3 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup margarine softened
Cream cheese icing
  • 6 tbsp margarine
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt

You can find the instructions here at Jo Cooks. I give Kenten props. I personally hate making cinnamon rolls (probably because they NEVER turn out right when I make them). They are a lot of work, but they taste so yummy. Hopefully this boy will take on the task of making us cinnamon rolls from here on out!

To celebrate our first day of school I made the kiddos a “selfie wall”. I absolutely love how it turned out… Even if it did take me almost two hours to get it all hung up and another 15 minutes this morning to hang up a few things that fell down over night.

Welcome to Tea Time Tuesday... End of Summer Edition!

Although there are still a few weeks before summer is officially over it truly feels like the end of summer to us... In a few days we will be starting the new school year, the weather has changed, and some of our trees have already lost their leaves. It has been a strange summer to say the least, but we are excited for all the fun things that fall brings.

This week we are switching things up a bit- My children are going to take turns selecting and making the recipes for Tea Time Tuesdays. Miss Julia is up first and she chose M&M Cookies. To make your own M&M Cookies you will need:

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups M&M's

Tea Time Tuesday-Brownie Edition

Welcome to  Tea Time Tuesday!

This week for Tea Time Tuesday we are talking all about “brownies”… The kind you eat and the folklore! Do your kiddos know what a brownie is? Mine didn’t, so we read a little about them here. Since a lot of our featured poems are fairly short, we are also reading a few selections from Emily Dickinson or Edgar Allan Poe each week. I think during our next library run I will pick up a few different poetry books to switch things up a bit.

In a corner of the bedroom is a great big curtain,
Someone lives behind it, but I don’t know who;
I think it is a Brownie, but I’m not quite certain.
(Nanny isn’t certain, too.)

I looked behind the curtain, but he went so quickly –

They wriggle off at once because they’re all so tickly
(Nanny says they’re tickly too.)

The kids made my favorite brownies this week. I found this “Bombshell Brownies” recipe a few years ago, and it is the ONLY brownies I will make now.

To make your own Bombshell Brownies you will need:

  • 1 cup butter, melted
  • 3 cups white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

You can find the recipe here on allrecipes. They are so easy to make and taste way better than a boxed mixed… And don’t forget about how amazzzzzing your house smells while they are baking (yum)!

As you can see we kept our table very simple this week (and I snuck in a few pictures of ALL of my kiddos-shh!). We like our brownies fresh out of the oven, so we served up in the kitchen to avoid making a big mess.

Tea Time Tuesday-Wind Edition

Welcome to Tea Time Tuesday!

I can’t believe another week has come and gone… I really don’t know where the time is disappearing to this summer! However, we are excited that it is time for another Tea Time Tuesday. The weather in Michigan has been crazy this year. I feel like we have been living in a windstorm ALL SUMMER, so I wanted to feature a poem about wind!

No one can tell me,
Nobody knows,
Where the wind comes from,
Where the wind goes.

I’s flying from somewhere
As fast as it can,
I couldn’t keep up with it,
Not if I ran.

But if I stopped holding

I should know that the wind
Had been going there too.

So then I could tell them

This week Julia really wanted to make tea sandwiches and do Tea Time Tuesday at lunch. My children are the PICKIEST eaters in the world (seriously… ugh!), which means I don’t have a recipe to share this week since our tea sandwiches consisted of only pb&j! Wind on the Hill by A.A. Milne talks about flying a kite, so we decided to make these cute kite snacks in place of trying out a new recipe.

We used:

  • Graham crackers
  • Peanut Butter
  • Chocolate chips
  • Shoe string licorice

Tea Time Tuesday

Welcome to Tea Time Tuesday… Strawberry Jam Edition

I don’t know how it is possible, but August is here and we celebrated with our very first poetry tea time. For years I have been talking about starting this tradition…. However doing and saying are two very different things! I am so happy that I finally stopped being the slacker that I am and kicked off August in this fun way. Strawberry Freezer Jam
To make your own strawberry freezer jam you will need:

  • 2 cups crushed fresh strawberries
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 1 (1.75 oz) package dry pectin
  • 3/4 cup water

We followed the instructions here. This jam was easy to make, and my children loved putting it on warm biscuits. They are also looking forward to trying it on ice cream tomorrow afternoon.

Julia, Jack, and I went on a “thrifting” mission to find the perfect dishes to use during our Tuesday Tea Times and we were lucky enough to find a silver teapot and lazy susan serving tray! Unfortunately, we were not able to find enough teacups and saucers, so I ordered this set off of Amazon.

We paired our strawberry freezer jam with fresh baked biscuits, strawberries with cream, and a variety of cookies (Yes, store bought… No judging!). I wanted to keep this week’s menu fairly simple to ease into our new tradition, but in the upcoming weeks I plan on having the children prepare an entire meal for us.
